Chapter Seven
Blake packed as much of her stuff as she could in her bag, leaving her school books on the bed. Logan had left an hour ago, and they were leaving as soon as he came to pick her up. She would run with him, even though she was terrified. There was nothing for her here.
“You can do this.”
She licked her parched lips, and stuffed her bag full of clothes. Next stop would be the kitchen. Glancing across at the clock, she saw it was six-thirty. Her parents were usually gone by now.
Her cell phone beeped.
Logan: on way.
Blake: I’m ready.
Leaving her bedroom, she made her way downstairs, toward the kitchen, and froze. Her mother and father were sitting at the table. Both of them were wearing robes, and they each had a smile on their face. Why weren’t they at work?
“Blake, sweetie, come in. I’m making breakfast.”
“What are you doing home?” she asked. This had to be the first time that both of her parents were home when she was up for school. Placing her bag beside the door, she entered the kitchen, and took a seat in the only chair left. This was the space where she ate all of her dinners.
“I know I’m usually gone, but things are going to change around here. I’m taking different hours at work, and so is your father.”
He turned toward her with a smile. “Morning, Blakey.”
She could only stare. “What?”
“We, erm, we had an intervention of sorts, and we know how awful we’ve treated you.”
“An intervention?”
“Yes. We want to change what we’ve done, and we want to make a fresh start,” her mother said. “We’ve been trying to show you we’ve changed for a few months now.”
“I’ve done nothing but push you away, and the truth is, we shouldn’t have done.”
This was just too much.
“So an intervention, and you want to be better parents? Just like that?” Blake asked. She was on the verge of running away with the only person who cared about her, and now her parents wanted to throw out that little nugget of information that they wanted to care.
“It wasn’t always like this. There were times we were happy—”
“Bullshit.”
“It’s true,” Mitchell said.
“I don’t believe it. I don’t remember it.”
“Just because you don’t remember it, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen,” he said.
“We are sorry…”
Blake didn’t look at them or even hear them. On the one hand, this was everything she wanted, but now, she didn’t want it. Logan was coming to get her. He would be there within minutes, and she wanted to be with him. They were friends, and they relied on each other. In the recess of her mind, she did have a few good memories. Her mother telling her the other month about the whole pancakes had made her remember. She just refused to believe it.
“For seventeen years I’ve had to live with what an ugly disappointment I’ve been,” she said, lifting her head. “I’m not the beloved son you wanted, or the beautiful girl you wanted.
